Don't Be Mean to Kevin: The PR Snafu of the Week

By Massimo O'Neil
Fashion Wire Daily NY - Don't write anything rude about Kevin.

Call it the fashion equivalent of the Nixon White House black list. A New York-based publicist mistakenly forwarded an e-mail Wednesday about an upcoming event next month at the Hudson hotel, followed by an LA event, celebrating triggerstreet.com, a website launched by Kevin Spacey in 1997 for the purposes of discovering new talent. The e-mail was sent to nearly 30 editors, including our dear compatriots at US Weekly, New York Magazine, the New York Observer and the New York Sun.

The e-mail begins with a list of NO's, about as prohibitive as Bloomberg at a tobacco conference, reading as follows:

"NO Cathy Griffin NO Beverly Hills 213 NO OK Magazine NO Teen People NO Ted Casablancas/E! Online"

So, we understand OK mag and Ted, but what did Teen People do wrong? And poor, nice little Beverly Hills 213, a 50,000-circ pub that hits all the big mailboxes in the Hills? Another equally prohibitive list soon follows:

"NO Marc Malkin (he recently wrote a rude item about Kevin), however we can invite Catherine Townsend [the co-writer of the column] NO Zink Magazine NO New York Observer"

Apparently, only Spacey lovers need apply. To gain access, you can't have written anything bad about him (or even intimated that he's renting on gay-friendly Fire Island, as Malkin did). In fact, it seems the power-publicists-that-be want as little written on Sir Spacey as possible, as is made clear at the end of the message which states that gossip columnists are not wanted "wondering [sic] around for the duration of the party."

Now, we'd understand all the paranoia if the invitation was to a joint session of Congress. But a soiree for an obscure website founded by the star of (oy!) K-PAX? Uh-oh, did we just get ourselves banned from the bash?
